The 1999 Caregiver Health Effects Study (Schulz et al.) established a striking finding: chronic caregiver stress raises all-cause mortality 63% versus non-caregivers in matched populations. The 2020 AARP/NAC report put 53 million unpaid US caregivers in the picture — most don't realise they're in a clinically-recognised at-risk population. The AARP/NAC data also captured that 60% of caregivers have a musculoskeletal injury from transfers and lifting, primarily low-back. The exercise priorities are therefore three: protect the lifting back (glute strength + spinal awareness > brute strength), build mental-health buffers (cardio + breathwork have evidence-grade anxiolytic effect), and protect sleep. The critical AVOID: heavy unassisted patient transfers when mechanical lifts are available — use the lifts. They exist for exactly this reason and Medicare/insurance often covers them.

Volya's catalogue carries the foundation: supported-glute-bridge for the glute strength that protects the low back during lifting (most caregivers underestimate this), wall-push-up for upper-body strength without floor work (already hard to get to the floor after a long caregiving day), scapular-retraction for posture against chronic forward-rounded shoulders, cat-cow for spinal mobility, supine-knee-to-chest for low-back tension release, diaphragmatic-breathing for autonomic regulation under chronic stress, standing-march for cardio when extended outdoor time isn't possible, sit-to-stand for functional strength. The AI coach also knows the nutrition side — Mediterranean / anti-inflammatory backbone, consistent OWN meal timing (caregivers skip meals reactively), protein-forward, magnesium glycinate for muscle tension + sleep, omega-3 (algae for vegans, anticoagulant flag), caffeine after noon avoidance for sleep, alcohol AVOID (self-medication risk is high in this population), vitamin D + B-complex (chronic stress depletes), hydration reminders (caregivers dehydrate focusing on patient's needs), batch-cooking on respite days. CRITICAL: respite is medical. Arrange caregiver respite resources via Family Caregiver Alliance or AARP — recovery time is not optional. This is NEVER a replacement for the caregiver's OWN medical care: annual physical + mental-health check.
